Mobile TV Satisfies The Modern Consumers’ Need For Convenience

Convenience is the central trend that dominates the lifestyles of consumers in the 21st century and is fuelled by the desire and need to maximise the use of time in a world in which every minute counts. When schedules are squeezed, capabilities stretched and deadlines appear to be forever looming today’s consumers seek time-saving, simplifying and over-whelmingly convenient solutions to their everyday tasks and commitments. Now more than ever, technology, which over several decades has made many developments in enhancing the lives of consumers, has the task of fulfilling the greatest need in the lifestyle of its end users.

The need to make life as simple as possible has influenced the radical change in many consumer industries, such as the music business. In previous decades music collections were displayed by stacks of bulky, easily scratched and damaged LPs and CDs, nowadays thousands of tracks can be stored digitally on MP3 players small enough to slide into your pocket. Listening to music is now a simple, uninterupted process without the need to change a disc at the end of an album. Technology has altered music consumption and made it more convenient for everyone.

The internet and its ever increasing speeds,  which have unquestionably evolved as a direct response to consumer demand, provides the greatest source of convenience. Consumers can communicate with friends, search and find any information, read the latest news headlines , organise their finances and bills, buy everything on their shopping list and have it delivered to the door, play numerous video games against global competitors and update their social status whilst using just one computer.

Computers, themselves, have even been forced to change as consumers lifestyles have become increasingly mobilised. Sales in traditional PCs have been surpassed by the demand for laptops and netbooks which afford the consumer the same worldwide access without the restrictions of being at home. This development has continued with the design of tablets, such as the iPad, which exist purely to satisfy the growing need from consumers for technology that is accessible and useful.

Perhaps central to fulfilling the demand for convenience is the development of the mobile phone. The mobile phone has become ubiquitous, with over 5 billion in circulation by the end of 2010 (ITU Feb 2010), and provides the ultimate means for exploiting consumer downtime. A  Hill & Knowlton consumer survey reported that 59% of consumers could not imagine their lives without a mobile phone. The mobile acts, for so many consumers, as a technological nerve centre that allows time saving access to all their data and systems ranging from home, work and the internet. The Brandheld research (Jan 2010), illustrates that 70% of daily mobile internet users access social networks, instant messenger, blogs, forums and email.

One service that is rapidly increasing its popularity with consumers eager to capitalize on their downtime is mobile TV. Yamgo offers users the chance to enjoy free live TV on their mobile phone regardless of which network operator or phone they use. The free streaming service allows the viewer to watch breaking news, exciting sports, the latest music videos and the best entertainment no matter where they are.

Yamgo, is intune with the consumers’ desire for quick and easy access and provide the live streaming service over a 3G or Wi-Fi connection without the need for any software downloads. MOBILE PHONE IS NOW THE FIRST SCREEN!

2009 was the year that saw mobile phones replace television sets as the undisputed first screen of entertainment. Traditional televisions have suffered further by failing to outsell PCs as the market accommodates the changing needs of the global population. As research by Gartner, the leading technology research company shows 1.2billion mobiles were sold in 2009 compared to 306million PCs and 211million TVs. Samsung, the largest maker of TVs, sells five times as many mobile phones as it does televisions. Mobile Phones are now the first screen, PCs the second, Televisions are the third and Cinema the fourth screen.

The emergence of mobiles as the choice of every generation is fed by the desire of the modern consumer for control. The mobile phone allows the user the choice of searching the internet, watching live mobile TV and video content, listening to music, maintaining contact through social networks and blogs and sending and receiving emails. A recent survey carried out at a university campus asked people to choose which item they would never leave home without, money, laptop, make-up or mobile. The resounding answer amongst those questioned at Swansea University was their mobile.

Habits amongst the viewing population are changing. The days of sitting statically in front of the family television are gone. Teenagers don’t want to sit and watch TV at home anymore waiting for their parents to choose a channel they deem suitable. With the emergence of live mobile TV services such as Yamgo.mobi, users can access the content they want at the touch of a button. Businessmen in need of up to the minute news whilst commuting from office to meeting are utilising their Smartphone and accessing live mobile TV.

The growing demand for a TV service that can benefit today’s 24 hour culture is illustrated by a recent comScore survey of Smartphone users. The company renowned for digital marketing intelligence found 32% of Iphone users and 14.6% of all other Smartphone users who accessed the internet did so in order to watch live mobile TV.

These figures will continue to increase as smartphone sales rapidly escalate  and mobile phone technology improves and successfully provides a more authentic and enjoyable TV experience.
